2019 Steuben County Kite Festival

Steuben County’s 2019 Kite Festival will take place this Saturday, March 16th from 12pm – 5pm. Read on for an inside view of last year’s Kite Festival!

Here it is already the middle of March and of course everyone is getting antsy to go and enjoy the outdoors!

Pokagon State Park was hosting the Spring Fling Kite Festival that featured professional kite flyers from Team Sky FX on St. Patrick’s Day so we thought this event would be the perfect opportunity to get some fresh air. It was quite chilly today but we bundled up and headed out to the State Park to see what the Kite Festival was all about.

When we got to the Potawatomi Inn we saw a couple kites way up in the sky. Free kites were available to the first 100 people, but MaKenzy brought her lizard kite to fly so we didn’t take a free kite. The Team had a trailer full of different types of kites, there was a tent set up for people to put their kites together and there was even live music being played on the Potawatomi Inn’s Sundeck. Team Sky FX had a large area marked off for them to show off their kite flying skills, so we headed down towards the beach to see if we could catch a gust of wind to get MaKenzy’s kite flying high. As we were walking down the lawn we noticed that members from Team Sky FX had kites that looked rather complicated. Their kites were equipped with two handles and several lines leading up to the kite. It was quite interesting to see them maneuver the kites and get them up in the air because all the lines would probably get tangled if I tried to fly one!

Once we got down to the beach we realized that the wind was not particularly strong, but Bryan and I both were able to catch a gust of wind to get Mak’s kite up in the sky a couple times so she could fly it. After a couple good flights with the kite, we all started getting cold so we headed back to the Inn. Several people were utilizing the fire ring to stay warm so they could enjoy the kites and there were several other groups sitting on benches watching Team Sky FX.

The Spring Fling Event on Facebook advertised candy drops, but we weren’t able to stay for that. MaKenzy would have enjoyed seeing the candy drop and I was curious to see how one worked! Food was also available for purchase ranging from popcorn to pulled pork sandwiches.

We all wished it was a little warmer, but we still enjoyed seeing Team Sky FX show off their skills!
