“Downtown Angola Archi-Tour”

A walking tour of the downtown Angola commercial historic district, from the Historic Preservation Commission.

In the early part of the 19th century, the first non-native American settlers that arrived in the area were almost exclusively from the eastern states of New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Ohio.  Steuben County offered abundant natural resources such as vast lakes as a food source and fresh water supply, rolling prairie fields rich in tillable soil and mature stands of hardwood forest for the construction of buildings and furniture.  Angola was platted in 1836, became the county seat of government in 1837, was incorporated as a town on October 1, 1866 and in 1906 was incorporated as a city.

By the early 1920’s, the national highway numbering system designated Maumee Street as U.S. 20.  It proved to be one of the most important travel routes across the northern part of Indiana, helping make downtown Angola’s Public Square a hub, connecting urban areas west of Angola to the remaining eastern part of the country.

In recent years, downtown Angola began its own revitalization effort. The newly constructed streetscape respects local architectural heritage, honors the best in our traditions and enhances the downtown experience for both locals and visitors alike.
